(mo͝o-häm′ĭd, -hă′mĭd) also Mo·ham·med (mō-, mo͝o-)570?-632.Arab prophet and founder of Islam. Muslims regard him as God's messenger through whom the Koran was revealed. Muhammad established a theocratic state at Medina after 622 and began to convert Arabia to Islam.

He began to teach in Mecca in 610 but persecution forced him to flee with his followers to Medina in 622. After several battles, he conquered Mecca (630), establishing the principles of Islam (embodied in the Koran) over all Arabia
